BurialMay 11, 2017Thomas Houghton, age 85, of Manahawkin died peacefully at home on May 1, 2017. Son of the late Albert and Mary Houghton, he was born July 16, 1931 in Mount Kisco, NY.

After moving to Harvey Cedars in 1939, he attended the one-room schoolhouse in Barnegat City for grades 4-5, and graduated from Barnegat High School in 1948. He graduated from Columbia University in 1952, and later served as an officer in the US Navy amphibs from 1952-1957.

Tom began his career with Connecticut General in Bloomfield, CT before returning to Harvey Cedars in 1961. He and his family operated Houghton's Rowboats and Clam Bar on 83rd Street for 25 years. He also taught school in Lacey Township for 27 years until retiring in 1987. Toms was active in the Beach Haven Exchange Club, the Harvey Cedars Zoning Board, and as a Little League Baseball Coach for the Shaffer team on the north end of the island.

Tom and his wife Joy are members of the Grace Calvary Church in Ship Bottom, and New Covenant Church, Pompano Beach, FL. Tom was an avid walker and loved swimming in the ocean.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joy Pflueger Houghton; his son Richard and his wife Elizabeth of Ocean City, NJ, his son Timothy and his wife Michele of Springboro, OH, his daughter Holly Gallagher and her husband Tim of Manahawkin, and his son Eric and his wife Carol of Titusville, NJ; thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

At Tom's request, cremation was private. A service celebrating his life will be held on Sunday, May 28 at 4pm at Grace Calvary Church, 19th and Long Beach Blvd, Ship Bottom, with refreshments to follow. For those who would prefer memorial contributions instead of flowers, the family asks you to consider Meridian Hospice South or Grace Calvary Chapel, Ship Bottom.

DeathMar 8, 2006Franklin, MA, USA
ObituaryJohn Alico, age 97, retired consulting mechanical engineer, died at Franklin Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Franklin, MA on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, of natural causes. He was born October 29, 1908 in Albany, New York to Frank and Rose Alico. In the early 1920's he began his first career as a pilot, first as a test pilot for Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company on Long Island, NY, then for the original Atlantic Coast Airways, for whom he flew a seaplane from Coconut Grove, FL to Hanvan, Cuba to Nassau, Bahamas. During his piloting career, he did barnstorming, flew air mail when pilots were paid by the pound of mail, and often flew the classic open cockpit plane called the 'Jenny' (JN-4). He particularly enjoyed reminiscing about these early days of flying and at the time of his death was writing a novel depicting this period. In the late 1930's, he attended the School of Engineering at Columbia University, New York City. In 1939, he married Stella Houghton in Westhampton Beach, Long Island, NY from whom he was divorced in 1958. In 1964 he married Marie Wintersteen in Adrian, MI. She preceded him in death in 2001. In the first several decades of his engineering career he was well known for his work with metallurgy and worked during this time for Alcoa in NY, Harvey Aluminum in CA, and at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. During WWII, the military requested he manage the construction of plants to manufacture airplanes for the war effort. His early career took him and his family from Briarcliff Manor, New York, their primary residence, to temporary assignments in Adrian, MI; Kingman, AZ; Henderson, NV; Cedar Crest and Albuquerque, NM; and Palos Verdes, CA. He moved from NY and lived in Adrian, MI from 1961 to 1964, Calumet, MI from 1965 to 1967 and then settled and based his consulting practice in Southfield, MI until he and his wife retired to Gaylord, MI in 1996. During his early engineering he wrote introduction to Magnesium and Its Alloys, the first book in English on this subject, published by Ziff-Davis in 1945. Following his emphasis on metallurgy, he formed a consulting company and worked extensively with large extrusion presses and manufacturing plants as well as other mechanical engineering projects. Later in his extensive career, he became an expert on heavy equipment and manufacturing plant appraisals. He was a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in four states, a member of many professional organizations including the American Society for Metals (ASM), and was the recipient of three 50-year awards from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), American Society of Appraisers (ASA), and The Minerals, Metals, & Materials Society (TMS), and two life member certificates from ASME and ASA. He was a Fellow of ASA, the highest form of membership, and also served as International President in 1980-1981. He was editor of Appraising Machinery and Equipment, sponsored by ASA and published by McGraw-Hill in 1989 and author of two chapters in that book. He did not technically retire from engineering and appraisals until he was 88. He and his wife were active in the First Presbyterian Church of Gaylord, MI prior to her death and his moving to Massachusetts. Both he and his wife Marie were members of the choir of that church, and he frequently entertained family and friends singing operatic selections accompanied by his wife on the piano. He is a life member and 32nd degree Mason of the Briarcliff Lodge of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York. During the period in which he lived in Briarcliff Manor, he and his family were active members of the Briarcliff Congregational Church. He was also an accomplished cook of many Italian dishes and enjoyed preparing them for family and friends. He is survived by his four children... The graveside funeral service for John Alico will be held Saturday, April 8 at 3:00 p.m. at Riverside Cemetery, Clinton, MI. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Jude Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929, where his grandson Terry William Turner was treated and died of leukemia in 1975.
