Notablehad 3 Mormon wives, 25 children and 475 grandchildren
BiographyBorn 1817 in Winhall, VT. Went to Utah by 1847. Had 16 children. Had 475 great grandchildren.

From letter of grandson Orville Day:

Lived at Mt. Pleasant, Utah for 25 years. Many of his children wee born there. Bound out at age 14 to a blacksmith who was cruel (whipped him severely, stingy about clothes, broke his contract by keeping him from school). At age of 16 he ran away. At 21 he married a Mormon girl, Elmira Buckley in southwestern NY on June 16, 1838 at Rutland, Tioga Co, western New York, on the Pennsylvania border. In the spring of 1839, Nauvoo, IL, on the Mississippi river became the headquartes of the Mormon Church. There first 5 children were born in Barry, Pile Co, IL; their oldest born Sep 7, 1839. They had 14 children. He joined the Mormons. Moved to Illinois were 4 babies were born; the three girl babies died. In June 27, 1844 Joseph Smith, the Mormon leader, was murdered by a mob. In the late summer of 1845 mobs burned the outlying farms of Mormons near Nauvoo. In Feb. 1846, they crossed the Mississippi river on the ice sand started out west, fleeing from mobs. Being a blacksmith, Abraham stayed in Nauvoo making wagons for the Mormons to use to travel west. In June, 1846 moved with Mormons in migration across western Iowa . While in covered wagon (with daughter, Janet, and pregnant wife) in the middle of Iowa he joined the Mormon Batallion (requested by President Polk) in War with Mexico: at first he refused ("Here is one who will never go."), but was convinced by Brigham Young (who traveled back
east from Omaho telling each group of Mormons to join). He was 28; his fellow soldiers called him "Abraham the Strong." This Mormon Battalion made the longest march in History, south to Leavenworth, Kansas, south west to Santa Fe, south down the Rio Grande to the border of Mexico, west along "La Camino de Los Muertos" (3 days without water). Starving, they killed a wild bull. He got two feet of the small intestine, but had it stolen. He went to San Diego, CA in Feb., 1846; then Los Angeles; Sutter's Fort, and east to Salt Lake City on Oct 17, 1847. But his family was back in Iowa. With two companions, riding 3 horses and a small pack mule. They ate the mule when food ran out, then a coyote, a crow, a skunk. No food for 3 days. He reached the log cabin that his wife had built near Omaha, NB, on Christmas eve, 1847. On the side of the cabin was a big fat pig, which they had for dinner. Returned to Utah in 1851, a 4 and a half month trip by ox team. Here he married a second wife (Charlotte Broomhead) and had 12 more children. 26 children in all. 16 children (8 girls and 8 boys) had children. For the first 10 years in Utah, they didn't have as much bread as they wanted. Greens were plentiful. After 1876, 20 years, no more famines in Utah. On his 80th birthday (given as Sep. 24, 1897, not Sep 7), a reunion was held with 128 family members. He died in 1901 (not in 1900 census).

The information for Abraham Day was found from the descendants in the male line of Robert Day of Hartford, Conn.

1860 Census lists living at Mt. Pleasant, Sanpete, UT, age 42, a machinist
(real estate, $1000; property, $500), living with Almira and 6 children at one house and Charlotte with 5 children at another house next door. 1870 Census lists him, age 52, a farmer (real estate, $1500, property, $300), living with Almira and 7 children, with Charlotte two houses down with 6 children. 1880 Census lists him, age 62, bp as NY, with Elmira, and 7 children. Charlotte died in 1872.
