OccupationHe built a home and operated a gristmill and batting factory form many years in Sutton MA. He ground corn in the grist mill and made cotton batts and sold them under the trade name of "Rosedale Batts." The 1857 Henry Walling Map of Worcester County showed the J. H. Houghton Batt Co., located on Cold Spring Brook. He constructed a 160 foot dam for the grist mill, creating the Houghton pond. On 20 Aug 1860 and on 21 Nov 1860 he extended his property by purchases from Nathaniel and Adeline Dodge. In 1870 he built an "English Cottage" on Buttonwood Ave. about 172 feet east of the grist mill. He later built a barn and spring house across the street. He removed his family from the Dudley House where all his children had been born.6
