JOHN G. CONOVER
Page 860
JOHN G. CONOVER, farmer; P. O. Biggs. As early as 1790, Peter Conover, of Monmouth Co., moved with his family to Woodford Co., Ky., where, in December, 1812, the subject of this sketch was born. The elder Conover was the youngest of five brothers, and the four oldest were all soldiers of the Revolution. In 1822, the Conover family, with a large number of relatives and acquaintances, desirous of locating beyond the influence of slavery, moved by wagons to this State, the journey occupying some months, and attended with hardships that would have deterred any but the stout-hearted. The party reached Springfield in June, and, after an examination of the country, chose the Jersey Prairie, in what is now Morgan Co., as the site of their future home. Peter Conover and his wife remained in this locality until their death, which occurred to the first in May, 1835, and to the latter in October, 1846. John G. Conover was married, in 1833, to Miss Susan Houghton; she died in 1845, and he was married, in 1846, to Mrs. Hannah Mitchell. He moved to this county in 1841, and settled in the vicinity of Bath. In 1849, he crossed the plains to California, and returned by way of the Isthmus in 1851. In the early days of Morgan and Menard Cos., he enjoyed the acquaintance of Lincoln, Yates and Col. Hardin, the latter making his home, in his youth, with the Conover family. Mr. Conover settled upon the place he now occupies, on Sec. 31, in 1866, consisting of 160 acres, well improved, and worth about $30 per acre. His business capacity and integrity have been recognized by the people of Sherman Township, and on various occasions they have chosen him Justice of the Peace, and, for five years in succession, Assessor.10

ObituaryMilton Jerome (Jerry) Houghton, passed away January 30, 2023, aged 91. Born in 1931 in Carbondale, IL to Paul & Louisa Houghton. Jerry graduated Anna-Jonesboro Community High School in 1949. His father was a high school coach and teacher, his mother a homemaker. He first learned to count at his mother’s knee while watching the scoreboard at the games his father was coaching. He would later play both basketball and football for his father at Anna-Jonesboro High School before heading to off to Beloit College on a basketball scholarship.

At Beloit College, Jerry was a member of the renown 1951 team that played in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) in New York City at the end of that season. Jerry graduated Beloit in 1953 with a degree in Psychology, then fulfilled his obligations to the Navy and was enrolled in Officer Candidate School (OCS) just months after graduation. He completed OCS without a single demerit, a rare feat of which he was quite proud. Jerry achieved the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (Lt. JG) before mustering out in 1958. During his hitch he served on the Destroyer John W. Weeks and was deployed around the globe. During his senior year at Beloit he met a local grade schoolteacher (Karen Ackley, of Sherrill, NY), whom he married in the fall of ’53

Jerry’s professional life was marked with high achievement in the insurance industry with Aetna Life & Casualty. He would rise through the ranks in sales and management, and eventually retired as the General Manager of the Personal Financial Security Division (Chicago Office, #2 in the Aetna) in 1992. Life-long friendships were minted during his career Aetna which endure to this day! Jerry relished his life of retirement, moving to Lake Barrington Shores (far NW suburbs of Chicago) – a gated golf-course condo development in 1993.
Retirement provided ample opportunity for travel, and Jerry was fortunate to find Trudy Kleckner, who would be his travel partner and lady friend for the rest of his life. She survives. They traveled to most every corner of the globe, but Africa was a special destination for them both. Always a ardent fan of University of Illinois athletics, he was a season ticket holder for decades. Jerry became intimately involved with the Men’s Basketball program over the years. He and Trudy would travel to the see the team play in Champaign as well as Holiday tournaments, post-season, and off-season trips abroad. These were among his favorite trips, getting to know the players, coaches and administrators. Many dear friendships were formed among the fellow travelers and the Illini that endure to this day.

Growing up in southern Illinois Jerry was a life-long St. Louis Cardinal baseball fan and followed them closely - attending countless games over his life. Jerry was a sports fan in every sense of the term – he held season tickets to the Bulls (Jordan era), and Bears (as far back as their Wrigley Field playing days), and of course season tickets for football & basketball at the University of Illinois.

Jerry took up golf as an adult after son Steve showed an early interest in the sport, they continued to play as often as schedules would allow. He often played golf with a dedicated group on his home course (Lake Barrington Shores) which he enjoyed greatly. He once got within 4 strokes of shooting his age – recording a 92, at age 88!
