BiographyH. Houghton: He entered the preparatory department of Indiana Univ. when he was 19. His father had moved his family to Bloomington for thee purpose of educating his children. Hileary was a student until his graduation from the State University with an A.B. in June, 1880. For one year he taught in the public schools of Parke Co., Indiana. He was admitted to the bar in Martin Co.. "Judge" Houghton practiced in Loogootee and had a partnership with ex-Senator G. W. Alford until Dec. 1884. He then partnered with Ephraim Moser, until the later's death. For the next 5 years, until his election to the State Senate, he practiced law with James B. Marshall at Shoals. He sought public office and was elected four times. In 1894 he was elected as a Republican to the Indiana State Senate, serving in the 1895 and 1897 sessions. He was elected to the office of judge of ther 49th judicial district in 1898 and was re-elected in 1904, serving 12 years and retiring in 1910. He then reopened a law office at Shoals until Feb. 1918 when he moved to Vincennes. He worked until his death, frequently being called upon to sit as Special Judge in the Knox Circuit Court. He was a Mason and a Knight of Pythias.9

BiographyHe graduated from Shoals High School. While at Indiana University, and was editor of the Indiana Daily Student and of the Indiana University Arbutus yearbook. In 1919, after returning to Indiana, he joined the staff of the Vincennes Commercial, a Republican newspaper. He was later made its editor, then the editor of the Sun-Commercial when the two papers merged in 1933. He was a member of the Vincennes City Council when he was appointed editor of the Huntington Herald-Press in 1935. Later, he was made editor-publisher, a position he held until his retirement in 1965. He was active in Indiana political circles, serving as a speech writer and was president of the Republican Editorial Association in 1955 and 1956. He was president of the Kiwanis Club in 1947. He was president of the Huntington County Society for Crippled Children in 1948 and served 3 terms. He was one of the founders of the Cosmopolitan Club and was a past president. He was president of the Huntington Chamber of Commerce in 1954 and 1955. He was president of the Society of Indiana Pioneers in 1974 and in that year was honored by Governor Otis R. Bowen by being named "Sagamore of the Wabash." He was a past member of thee boards of the Huntington College Foundation and the Community Chest. He was a 50 year member of the Vincennes Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite in Fort Wayne, the Huntington Elk's Lodge, and the Indianapolis Press Club. He was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church and a past clerk of the Session. He served as commissioner from the Wabash River Presbytery to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. Philadelphia in 1956.14

BiographyMary was president of the Vicennes Tri Kappa Sorority, and president of the Fortnightly Club while in Vicennes. In Huntington, Indiana Mary was active in the First Presbyterian Church. She wa a former president of the Presbyterian Women's Association, and past member of the 19th Century Club and Study Club. During WWII she worked as a draftswoman for the Magnavox Corp. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She was at one time appointed as a newspaper correspondent by Eugene Pulliam, publisher of the Indianopolis Star and the Huntington Herald-Press. She wrote for the newspaper while travelling in Europe and Russia. After her husband died, she spent some time living with her son William Houghton in Huntington, later moving to the Peabody Home, North Manchester, Wabash Co., Indiana.2

brother, William H. Houghton. He was preceded in death by his other brother, Howard B. Houghton, Jr.
John practiced law in Indianapolis since 1943 with the law firm, Barnes & Thornburg LLP and its predecessor, Barnes, Hickam. Pantzer & Boyd, until his retirement in 1999. He practiced primarily in Litigation and Probate. John was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel He was also listed in annual editions of Best Lawyers in Indiana.
John was born on March 30,1920 in Vincennes, Indiana and graduated from Huntington (Ind.) High School. He graduated with an AJJ. degree in 1941, from Indiana University at Bloomington, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity. At IU School of Law at Bloomington, he was Editor-in-Chief of the Indiana Law Journal, President of die IU Law Club, a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity and the Order of the Coil John received an LLB degree, cum laude, in December, 1942, and later was awarded a J.D. degree.
John was President of the Indianapolis Bar Association in 1961, of the Lawyers Association of Indianapolis in 1952- 53, and of the Indianapolis Lawyers Club in 1971-72.
In 1973, John received the 50-Year Award of the Fellows of the Indiana Bar Foundation. In 1995 he was inducted into the Academy of Law Alumni Fellows of the Indiana School of Law at Bloomington, the highest recognition accorded by the Law School to its alumni

He served the community in other capacities. He was Director of Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana from 1958 until 1989, was President of the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society in 1959, and served on the Board or Visitors of the Indiana School of Law at Bloomington from 1976 and is former Chairman.
John was an avid tennis player, from his high school days until shortly before his death.
A celebration of life for John will be held on Saturday August 1, at 2 p.m. at St Luke's United Methodist Church, 100 W 86th St, with calling at the church from 1 p.m. to the time of service. Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center - Carmel is entrusted with the arrangements.
