Silas sold his half to Caleb Moore and Caleb sold Silas' half to his brother, Eleazar, thus giving Eleazar the whole of the house and farm. Captain Jonas had not built this place but had inherited it from his father, Jonas.
Eleazer soon obtained his brother's half, as well, and thus owned the whole house and farm until his untimely death in 1814. He had married Rebecca Barrett in 1804, and after he died the homestead was sold for the benefit of their children. Bolton Historical Website: 96 Green Road

Formerly called the Helen Woodbury House, recent research has led to a name change to the Capt. Jonas Houghton House. Capt. Jonas Houghton (1728-1801), believed to have inherited this house from his father, Jonas Houghton, was a Deacon in the Bolton church as well as a farmer and a soldier in the Revolution, and probably also in the French and Indian War. He and his first wife, Rebeckah, were married in about 1753. If Esther Whitcomb's estimate of a construction date of ca. 1760 is correct, then the senior Jonas Houghton would have built the house several years after his son's marriage. Capt. Jonas had at least nine children, and like many of Bolton's eighteenth-century farmers, he left his homestead, not to one of his older sons (271 Vaughn Hill Road), but to his younger offspring. Eleazer (1776-1814) and Silas Houghton (b. 1777), children of Capt. Jonas and his second wife, Lucy, who had died in 1794, inherited this property upon their father's death in 1801.

MLM: Noted surveyor of nearby towns. Resided Lancaster, Bolton, Sudbury, MA.

After the Indian massacre in 1676, the town was abandoned by the settlers, and the beamans went back to Dorchester, where Gamaliel died March 23, 1678. John Beaman first son of Gamaliel and Sarah married about 1674 Priscilla Thornton daughter of Robert Thornton of Boston, and returned to Lancaster where he died Jan. 15 "1739-40" in the 90th year of his age. There are no birth records from that period, and Zeruiah was *not* baptized in 1708 when several children of Jonathan were done all together. Did Jonathan mention her in will or other document, by any chance? Then, too, who was her mother? There's no record of any marriages in Lancaster from that period either, and the baptism records of Jonathan Moore's children never mention the mother. Jonthan's wife as of 1736 is known to have been Hannah Sawyer, but is there any proof she was his wife all along."

NoteSterling, Massachusetts Historical Society
It's interesting to see how much of our perception about history is based on what we see come out of Hollywood. With TV shows like the Waltons and Little House on the Prairie, the 1970's certainly had its fair share of productions that gave us a look at the past, albeit with a somewhat anecdotal sense of historical accuracy. The settings for many of these were places far away from New England, so the thought that they could have any connection to Sterling's history is extremely unlikely... Or is it?
Beaman Road is recognized as the part of Sterling that was first settled around 1720, with the road being named after Gamaliel Beaman, who was one of the fifet settlers to the area. Benjamin Houghton (a.k.a. "Landlord Ben") also settled in the area about that time. After they settled, Ben's daughter Zerviah would marry Mr. Johnathan Wilder in 1739. They would have 12 children together and build the lineage that included the families of Silas and Jonathan Wilder who settled in the area of what we know today as "Wilder Road."
When Johnathan's brother William married Sarah Whitcomb in 1741, he chose not to settle in Sterling (Lancaster at the time), and instead moved to a farm up near Putney, Vt. His son Daniel, and grandson Abel also settled as farmers in Vermont, but Abel's son James ventured to pursue his interests in farming in Franklin County, New York. By 1870 he had married Angelina Day and had six children, but because production at the farm in New York had become poor, they decided to move west toward Minnesota.
Around 1880, three of James's children (Royal, Aliza and Almanzo) settled in the Dakota Territory near the town of De Smet, South Dakota. It was here that Almanzo met and married a woman by the name of Laura Ingalls. Laura Ingalls Wilder would later become a well-known author whose stories and characters were the basis of the 1970's TV show "Little House on the Prairie".
So, the next time you are flipping through the retro TV channels and you happen across Dean Butler playing opposite Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert, we can grin a little bit in knowing that it all started here in Sterling, with the Wilders, Landlord Ben and that quiet little street on the west side of town that we all know today as Wilder Road.
