I have seen water run out the bottom of the wagon when it went up the hill to the barn with hay that was showered on after it was tumbled and ready to go in. Biographyp. 177, antique hearst was used for Aurelia Taft in 1934; p. 225, 'The Aurelia D. Taft Fund, a permanent fund of $10,800, was set up after the death of Miss Taft Apr. 21, 1934. 'Rilla', as she was known to her neighbors, and her brother Fred decided they would will their entire estate to the town. John E. Gale drew up the will which was witnessed by Mr. and Mrs. Everett Thayer. The will specified that the income fro the fund should be used, first to keep the road to the Center Cemetery in repair, and any balance left for whatever the town officials decided upon. The Tafts were frugal yet in many ways genereous. They definitely knew the value of money. When 'Rilla' gave up her teaching to care for her mother and the house, she wanted some money of her own meaning a share of the 'butter' money. Fred generously told her she could keep the money when she sold stamps to a neighbor. Fred withdrew his offer when he found 'Rilla' soliciting the stamp business of the neighborhood. She would never wash on Monday, that would be too common! Instead she cleaned the cellar and sprouted the seven bins of potatoes when necessary. Those bins contained different assortments of potatoes, one for the time the minister called, one for other visitors, another for baking, one for the hens and so on. 'Rilla' used to say that she had the only cook stove in town, the rest of us had a range which backed up to a wall. Her stove was set in thee middle of the room with a door on both front and back of the oven. Shortley before she died she had a neighbor make up a piece of woolen cloth that was purchased at the time of the Civil War!...The Tafts didn't live in the age of high wages but by their thrift they left a sizeable fund to their home town, a fund which is a perpetual memorial to the Taft name.'; p.304: the Taft estate was sold in 1938 to Hamilton and Constance Schwarz.2

ResearchTerrence Fowler, tfowler@skidmore.edu, 2018: We actually always were under the impression that she was a Native American (which is what I am researching) It may just be a coincidence that she was given the houghton name. My side of the family has always said that Alice Fox (her daughter) was Native American. Recently through this genealogy project, I have found another tree of relatives who we had not know about that also have been told Alice was Native American. My best guess would be she was actually half by blood and maybe Johanna was adopted.

BiographyAmos Fox, who was a native of Connecticut, settled in Wilmington at an early day and built, on road 59, the first frame house in the town, thus marking an important era in its history, where the harsh environments of pioneer life began to give place to the more commodious projections of thrift, skill and intelligence. Of his eleven children, Moses D. married Harriet Lowden and reared eight children, one of whom, Morris K., married Joanna E. Houghton, and resides on road 38.
