BiographyWhitcomb: "James Houghton and Rebecca Dunton were married in September of 1789, and probably started to build a house at once. He built on Houghton land which had belonged to his father, John. James and Rebecca had a large family, eleven in all, of which four died young. In 1811, at the age of forty-seven, James died. The house and all the property had to be sold and soon the Town was putting the older children into homes to earn their keep."

374 Harvard Rd

Formerly called the Houghton/Weatherbee House, current research has resulted in a name change to the James Houghton House.
A large tract of land on Golden Run, Harvard, and Bare Hill Roads stretching north into Harvard was owned by members of the Houghton family from the early days of the town of Lancaster. When petitions were presented to set off new towns in the 1720's and 1730's, many of the most active proponents were the farmers in this north part of what ultimately became Bolton. At least four of the five members of the first Board of Selectmen in 1738 lived in this section of town, and three of them were Houghtons. Over the years, parcels of the huge original landgrants were divided out to provide farms for later generations. James Houghton (1764-1811), a Revolutionary soldier and first owner of this house, married Rebecca (Becky) Dunton in 1789, and it is believed that this house was built around the time of their wedding on land they received from his father, John Houghton
In a fashion typical of the most prolific rural families of their era, over a twenty year period James and Becky had eleven children, four of whom died young. The lives of the Houghtons illustrated another sad trend when James died at the age of 47, and the older children were "put out" to other households to earn their keep. The house and farm were sold, to William Coolidge (1758-1826), in 1812.12,13

BiographyBolton, Worcester Co., MA, USA, A Joseph Houghton of Bolton who had a will dated 1847 whose children attended the Fry School. He provided for a high school for Bolton by giving the town a piece of land and directed that a building be erected (costing $2,400). He also bequeathed $12,000 to the town, to be used for school purposes. According to the terms of the will, nine men were named, whose descendants for one hundred years were not to be allowed to attend this school, Houghton High School. The town took the case to the MA Supreme Court, which set aside this clause. The nine men had all been tax assessors (including Thomas Houghton.)

It is Joseph Houghton (1772-1847) who is the owner shown on the Bolton map of 1831. Although Esther Whitcomb says he never married, she also reports he sent his children to the Fry School on Berlin Road. Evidence indicates that he was married to Mary Ray of Stow, in 1798, and in the 1820's divided out 33 acres for a farm for his eldest son, Stephen, on Sugar Road. He was a cooper as well as a farmer, and had a cooper shop on the property near the house. Some distance to the north, near the Harvard line, he had a cider mill, as well. During his lifetime the farm still extended north to Harvard and east to Sugar Road. He owned a large amount of property elsewhere in Bolton, as well as a house at the center at 715 Main St. and the lot which he left to the town in his will for a high school.20
