Eugene H. Houghton
Rescuer of Troops

Winnipeg, Man., Jan. 19 (Candian Press) -- Eugene H. Houghton, colonel of the United States Army in the first World War, who previously had risen to a captaincy in the Little Black Devils of Winnipeg (Now the Royal Winnipeg Rifles), died Monday in Miami, Fla., after an illness lasting ten years, according to word received here. He was 69 years old.
He came here in 1906 and in 1914, although 34 years old, enlisted as a private in the Eighth Battalion, Little Black Devils, and became a machine gunner captain. In 1917 he transferred to the United States forces as major.
While here he was a vessel broker on the Winnipeg Grain Exchange. Before coming to Winnipeg, he had been a sailor on the Great Lakes and a soldier in the Spanish-American War. His wodow survives. She resides in New Orleans.
A funeral service and burial will take place at his birthplace, Racine, Wis.
In October, 1918, Lieutenant Colonel Houghton led an attack that rescued a battalion of American soldiers which was surrounded by German troops on the western edge of the Argonne Forest. The Americans had gone without food for thirty-six hours while the target of enemy artillery and machine guns.
