NoteAug 14, 1900The Fifteenth's Record
The 15th regiment committee in charge of the dedication of the monument at Antietam will place the names of 118 killed and died from their wounds at Antietam on the bronze tablet. The list is as follows:
Co. F, 11 killed, 5 mortally wounded;
G Co., 9 killed, 8 died from wounds;
I Co., 9 killed, 7 mortally wounded;
C Co., 7 killed and 7 wounded mortally;
H Co., 9 killed and 8 wounded mortally;
D Co., 4 killed and 8 wounded mortally;
K Co., 7 killed and 2 mortally wounded;
E Co., 6 killed, 2 mortally wounded;
B Co., 3 killed, 1 mortally wounded;
the Andrew Sharpshooters, 10 killed and 1 mortally wounded.

The list will be inscribed on the rear tablets, which will be placed on the monument at Antietam.

The Fifteenth regiment, together with the company of sharpshooters attached to the regiment, lost more men killed and mortally wounded at the battle of Antietam than any other regiment of infantry during the entire war for any one single engagement. The Fifth New York is second, with 117; third, Fifteenth New Jersey, with 116, and fourth, Forty-ninth Pennsylvania with 100.

As the list of those of the Andrew Sharpshooters killed and wounded at Antietam is to appear on the bronz tablets which will be placed on the monument, the committee feels that special effort should be made to have some of the survivors present at the dedication Sep. 17. But two of the survivors are known to be living -- Chilon Houghton, a dentist at Danvers, who lives at East Douglas, and David M. Littlefield of ???.

Through these twoi men it is hoped to locate other survivors of the Andrew Sharpshooters. The Sharpshooters were a separate organization, and comprised some of the most expert shots in the country. There were two companies in this state. One of these was attached to the Fifteenth at Antietam, and suffered a terrible loss, losing as many men, lacking one, as the Fifteenth itself in the number killed outright.

BiographyJWH: 'Lewis T. worked at shoemaking when young; enlisted in the army in 1861 and was rejected on account of being under age; went west to the Rocky Mountains, where he hunted, prospected and mined with indifferent success until 1865, when he returned to the States and married L. Jennie Batchelder. He learned the carpenter's trade and worked at building and contracting until 1890. During the years 1886-7 he built a hotel at Hot Springs, N.C., in remarkably quick time, beginning the work the middle of January and completing it July 1st. July 4th, a large party of excusionists from Knoxville was entertained in the hotel. It had 175 rooms and one-quarter mile in length of veranda. The building was plastered throughout and probably no other job of equal magnitude was completed in the same length of time. It was a financial success. Another large job was the central group of buildings in the Medfield, Mass., Insane Asylum. He never lost a dollar on his contracts. He next embarked in the sheet steel business in which he lost nearly all he had made, but several of his inventions turned the tide and made the business a success. Some of his inventions were appropriated by the Whiting Machine Works. He bought suit and fought them through the courts for six years and won, securing liberal damages. One of his inventions is used by all the up-to-date cotton mills. Another is believed to be a greater improvement to a ring spinning frame than his ever been made, and great things are expected from it.16'
