BiographyEmeline Jane Houghton was born in July of 1884 to Emsley Moses Houghton and Theresa (Ricie) Ella Loomis in Clatsop Town, Clatsop County, Oregon. The 1900 Federal Census identifies her father as a logger who owned his own home free and clear. Her brother, William, was 15 at the time of the census. He later drowned at the age of 28 years on January 4, 1885 according to a Rock of Ages memorial plaque.

Emeline probably met August Edward Matz in Pasadena, California. They were married in 1915 in San Francisco and sometime after that moved to Dallas, Oregon where they opened another jewelry store. They made their final move to Winlock, Washington in 1916, opened another jewelry store and bought a house. William Edward was born February 19, 1918. By 1930 little had changed in the family except for a daughter, Elaine, who joined the family on September 3, 1922. In 1940 they lived on West Riteside Addition Street. William had left home by this time. Elaine married Dan Meyers on May 1, 1942 in Centralia, Washington. August died in 1943 and was buried in Winlock Cemetery. Emeline kept the store open for a time, but finally had to sell when she took sick. She died January 9, 1953 in Centralia, Washington. She was buried in the Winlock Cemetery.

"Following is newspaper clipping (The Mountain Wave, March 7, 1924, p. 3, c. 3.) on Houghton beating.

Four Are Held in Alleged Whipping Case

As an outcome of the alleged whipping of Frederick Houghton, at his home near Murillo, one night in the early part of last January, Sheriff Dan Patterson has arrested and placed under bond, Marcus West, J. H. Hardester and Roy McEntire, all of Murillo, and Lance Martin, of Landis, who were indicted by the February grand jury here charged with the offense. It is alleged that these men were among a number who visited the home of Houghton on the night mentioned, forcing themselves into his home and dragged him out, scantily clad, onto the frozen ground, and gave him a severe whipping. Some of the members of the party, it is said wore flimsy disguises and claimed that they belonged to the Ku Klux Klan organization, but their crude attempt at disguise, it is alleged, refutes the statement. Houghton was the Democrat nominee for tax assessor of Searcy county in the 1922 election, but was defeated by his Republican opponent.10 "
