Biography

Parents were Jacob Donner and Elizabeth Blue of the Donner Party. She was 7 during the expedition. Her feet were badly frostbitten and she lost four toes. Adopted by James F. Reed in 1848 and was raised in San Jose. She died less than a year after she married Sherman Houghton, probably of complications from childbirth. Her first cousin Eliza married Sherman and raised her daughter Mollie.

Money from thier father's estate was used to buy lots in San Francisco for George and Mary, but a complicated legal battle ensued with squatters went on for years. Mary's legal battle was waged after her death by Sherman on behalf of their daughter Mollie.³

William Eustis, 1776, enlisted in Capt. Thomas Bolter's company as an artificer and in 1778, while serving on the [p.244] “Count d' Estaing,” he was taken prisoner. He was a pensioner when he died in 1843.¹⁶

Biography

Youngest daughter of George Donner, b. NC, and Tamzene Eustis, b. MA. George Donner was one of two Springfield Illinois brothers who organized the ill-fated 1846-1847 Donner Party expedition across the Sierra Nevada, in which cannabilism occurred. Named after her mother's sister Eliza, who had married Jonathan Poor. She was said to have closely resembled her mother. Five daughters survived the ordeal, being rescued by relief parties that made their way to the stranded travellers at Donner Lake, but their parents perished. They arrived in Sutter's Fort in 1847. Eliza and Georgia, who were very close, the youngest two daughters, spent 7 years with a Swiss couple Christian and Mary Brunner, living first near Sutter's Fort and then Sonoma until 1854. They live then for 6 years with their older half sister Elitha and her husband Benjamin W. Wilder in Sacramento. Eliza attended St. Catherine's Academy at Benicia and the public schools of Sacramento.

In 1879 she began a lengthy correspondence with historian C. F. McGlashan. They became close friends and she collaborated with him on his History of the Donner Party (1879), and even wrote some of the text.

George and Tamzene Donner's youngest child was named after her mother’s sister Eliza, who had married Jonathan Poor. Eliza was said to have resembled her mother.
Eliza and Georgia, the two youngest children of George and Tamzene Donner, were very close. Although Hiram O. Miller had been appointed their legal guardian, they were taken in by an elderly Swiss couple, Christian and Mary Brunner, living first near Sutter’s Fort and later at Sonoma. The girls were with the Brunners until 1854, then went to live with their half-sister Elitha, whose husband, Benjamin W. Wilder, became their guardian in place of Miller. Eliza attended St. Catherine’s Academy at Benicia and the public schools of Sacramento.
Eliza married Sherman Otis Houghton, the widower of her cousin Mary. Sherman, a lawyer, was a prominent citizen of San Jose and served a term in Congress from 1871 to 1875. He, Eliza, and their family lived until in San Jose until 1886, when they moved to Southern California. Eliza belonged to several organizations, including the Red Cross, the Native Daughters of the Golden West, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and was also active in her church.
In 1879 Eliza began a lengthy correspondence with historian C. F. McGlashan. They became close friends. She collaborated with him on his History of the Donner Party (1879), and even wrote some of the text. Her own book, The Expedition of the Donner Party and Its Tragic Fate, was published in 1911, sixty-five years after the events it describes. Although she wrote authoritatively, as though she remembered the events she described, most of her account of the Donner Party can be traced to previously published sources, her older sisters’ recollections, and the statement of Jean-Baptiste Trudeau, who visited her in 1884. In 1874 he joined the directorate of the National Life Insurance Co. until his death. He became the treasurer in 1885. He became Vice President in 1897 and President in 1901. He was a Republican, state representative in 1886. He attended the Episcopalian Church and was a Mason.

JAMES CLAY HOUGHTON.
James Clav Houghton, deceased, for many years an active and honored citizen of Alontpdier, was born at Petersham, AJassachusetts,
September 2, 1841, and died at Naples, Italy, March 4, 1902, whither he had gone in search of rest. He was a son of the late Rev. James Clay
Houghton, and a direct descendant in the eighth generation from John Houghton, the immigrant, the line of descent being as follows : John, John,
Jacob, Ensign Jacob, Abraham, Captain William IT., RCA-. James C. and James C. John Houghton (2), the first of the family of whom we have any definite record, was born in 1650, and for sixteen terms, from 1690 until 1724, represented the town of Leicester, Massachusetts, in the general court. He married Mary Farrar, who was born in 1648. Jacob Houghton, born April 17, 1674, married Rebecca Whitcomb, who was born December 9, 1671. Ensign Jacob Houghton, born in 1696, served in the Leicester, Massachusetts, militia as ensign of his company. He married Mary Willard, who was born in 1705. Abraham Houghton, born November 27, 1725, served as a soldier in 1744. His wife, whose maiden name was Sarah Duvall, was born March
22, 1733-34-Capt. William H. Houghton was born March 23, 1774. He married Marilla Clay, who was born July 14, 1780, a daughter of Lieutenant
James Clay, and granddaughter of Captain James Clay. Captain Clay, who married Lydia Walker, was a man of prominence in the Revolution, serving as captain of a company in the Continental army, and being chairman of the committee of safety in 1776. Lieutenant James Clay, who married Elizabeth Warren, was also in the Revolutionary army, receiving his commission as first lieutenant in Captain Wilson's company, Colonel Putney's regiment, October 19, 1779. Rev. James C. Houghton was born in Sutton, Vermont, May 13, 1810, and died April 29, 1880. He was a man of scholarly attainments, obtaining his education at Amherst and Dartmouth Colleges and at the theological, school at East Windsor Hill, Connecticut. Entering upon his professional labors as a Congregational minister, he had charge of churches in Petersham and South Wilbraham, Massachusetts, and in Chelsea,
Middletown and Royalton. Vermont, having successful pastorates in each place. After his retirement from the ministry, he lived for a time in Burlington,
Vermont, but died at the home of his son, James Clay Houghton, in Alontpdier. He married, in 1840, Julia Morton, who through one of her ancestors, Eleanor Barnett, was a descendant of the Earl of Yorkshire, or Leicestershire, England, whose eldest son inherited the paternal estate, while the other three sons emigrated to America. These three brothers had money, also a dowry, which they sold to a gentleman in Boston. One of these three brothers, Robert Morton, settled in East Windsor, Connecticut, where he became a large landholder. His son, John Morton, was the father of James Morton,
whose daughter, Julia Morton, married Rev. James C. Houghton. Of their union three children were born, namely: James Clay, the subject of this sketch; Joseph Goodhue, of Stamford, Connecticut, and Julia M., of Montpelier, Vermont. James Clay Houghton attended the public schools of Petersham, Massachusetts, the East Windsor Hill (Connecticut) Academy, and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College in 1862. After his graduation from that institution he studied law for two years, was afterwards deputy clerk of the Orange county court at Chelsea, Vermont, for
a short time, resigning to become cashier of the Orange County National Bank, a position that he retained until 1871, when he accepted the cashiership of the First National Bank at Alontpdier. In 1874 Mr. Houghton was made one of the directorate of the National Life Insurance Company, with which he was identified until his sudden death, as above mentioned. Entering the office of the company as its treasurer in 1885, he performed the responsible
duties of that position with great ability and fidelity until 1897, when he was chosen vice president, in January, 1901, being elected its president. During the twenty-eight years in which Mr. Houghton was connected with this company, he devoted his time and energies to advancing its interests, enlarging its operations, and being largely instrumental in making it one of the most popular and successful institutions of the kind in New England. His untiring industry, zeal and sterling integrity ivere recognized by his associates, who keenly felt their loss. Although not an aspirant for political honors, Mr. Houghton served as treasurer of the Montpelier board of public instruction for many years: was several times a delegate to county, district and state Republican conventions, and in 1886 represented his city in the state legislature. He was also treasurer of the town of Montpelier. Although a Congregationalist in his religious faith, he attended the Episcopal church. At the time of his death he was president of the Wood Art Gallery, a trustee of
the Washington county grammar school, and a director of the First National Bank, all of Montpelier. Fraternally he was identified with the Masonic order, being a Knight Templar. AJr. Houghton married, in 1869, Miss Grace R. Blackweli, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their children were born of their union, namely: Edward Rittenhouse Houghton, of Boston. Massachusetts: and Grace Morton Houghton, of Montpelier. From the many encomiums and resolutions of esteem and respect passed by the various societies and business organizations of which Mr. Houghton was a member, the following appreciative words from Hon. J. A. De Boer, vice president of the National Life Insurance Company, sent out to all agents of the company, are selected
as representatives:
"The essential characteristics of James C. Houghton were absolute honesty, a faculty for constant work, fidelity to every trust, and a certain charming personality, which, coupled with many acts of kindness, brought and held him the friendship of men. No one in the community where he lived and did his work enjoyed a larger measure of profound personal affection and respect, and no man's death could bring to those who knew him best a more sincere
sense of personal loss. While he discharged innumerable services for his banks, his town, its schools and all its other forms of educational and moral life, to say nothing of recurring private trusts, it was essentially as a director and officer of the National Life Insurance Company that he gave his largest and most conspicuous sendee. The burden of his thought and work was placed there, and it is not wholly incorrect to suppose that in some degree its responsibilities and care contributed to his comparatively early death. "It is impossible for us under this sudden and heavy blow to properly inventory our feelings, and make a true estimate of the man whom we have so intimately known as an associate and so sincerely respected as an officer and a
man. He left us but yesterday for the seas in search of well earned rest. The seas return him to his home and his native shores to rest forever,
leaving us the memory of a good, strong, faithful and noble life spent in the service of his race."
And also a portion of the resolution of the Society of Colonial Wars; "Mr. Houghton was a man of sterling character. He bore the burden
of important private and public trusts with marked ability and the highest fidelity. He rendered valuable service in many local and responsible offices. He fulflillcd his duties as a citizen with constant and unselfish attention. In his private life he Avas all that was estimable and of good report, exemplifying the character of a Christian gentleman, and winning by his unvarying courtesy and kindness the esteem of all who were brought in contact with him in the various relations of life."

JOSEPH G. HOUGHTON DIES; For 20 Years He Was a Leader in Civil Affairs in Stamford.
Stamford, Conn., Jan. 16.--Joseph Goodhue Houghton, President of the Fidelity Title and Trust Company, Park Commissioner of Stamford and, for about 20 years, a prominent figure in public and business here, is dead at his house, 255 Summer Street, of a lung affection, after seven weeks' illness.
Mr. Houghton was born in Petersham, Mass., Sept. 13, 1842, the son of rev. James Clay Houghton, a Congregational clergyman who was a brother of Henry Oscar Houghton, who founded the Riverside Press at Cambridge. Joseph G. Houghton graduated from Amherst in 1865.
He entered the hardward business in Brooklyn and in 1869 married Miss Sarah Pierrepont Edwards of Brooklyn who is a descendant of Jonathan Edwards. In 1883 Mr. Houghton and his family came to Stamford, where he established himself in the hardware business. He retired in 1897.
Mr. Houghton was treasurer of the Stamford Congregational Church, a trustee of the Helene M. T. Holly $50,000 Fund for the poor; chairman of th Committee on Laws of the Grand Council of the Royal Arcanum of Connecticut; treasurer and vice president of the Woodland Cemetery Association; treasurer of the Varuna Water Company, and a director of the Citizens Savings Bank.
He is survived by his wife and three sons, Walter Edwards Houghton, Secretary and Treasurer of the Citizens Savings Bank; Frederick Morton Houghton, Assistant Cashier of the First National Bank, and Herbert Pierrepont Houghton, President of Waynesburg College, Waynesburg, Penn.¹⁶

Albert F. Houghton, retired partner of the publishing firm of Houghton Mifflin Company, 386 Fourth Avenue, died on Sunday at the Park West Hospital, 170 West Seventysixth Street, after a ten-day illness. He was 87 years old and lived at 425 West End Avenue.

New York—(AP) Albert F. Houghton, 87, director and former vicepresident of Houghton, Miffin & Company, publishers of Boston and New York, died Sunday of heart complications after an operation, it was revealed yesterday.

Among authors he published were Kate Douglas Wiggin and Mary Johnston, whose “To Have and To Hold” was a best seller at the turn of the century. He was among the first to seek early movie scenario material in book… and directed the sale of many of Francis Bret Harte’s stories to motion picture studios. He was unmarried.D

NY Times: DR. ARCHIBALD L. LOVE DIES IN HIS 78TH YEAR; Former Assistant Pastor of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, Was a Native of Connecticut.

The Rev. Dr. Archibald L. Love, formerly for several years assistant pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn during the pastorate of the Rev. Dr. Newell Dwight Hillis, died on Friday night in St. John's Hospital after a brief illness. He was in his seventy-eighth year. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at his late home, 179 Park Place, Brooklyn, with the Rev. Dr. J. Stanley Durkee, pastor of Plymouth Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery.
Dr. Love was a native of Connecticut and was educated at hamilton College and Andover Theological Seminary. Following his ordination in 1879 he had held pastorates at princeton, Mass; Putnam, Conn; the Manhattan Congregational Church, St. Louis, Mo., and Albany, N.Y. While in Albany he also served as chaplain of the State Senate and Assembly. He became assoicated with the plymouth Church in 1910 succeeding the Rev. H. H. Crocker.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hattie C. Houghton, daughter of Albert G. Houghton of Houghton, Mifflin & Co., whom he married fifty-one years ago; four sons, Dr. O. Houghton Love of Little Falls, N.Y; Archibald L., Jr., of Brooklyn; William D., of Berkeley, Cal., and Albert G. Love, and two daughters, Mrs. R. H. B. Thompson of St. Louis and Mrs. C. Lansing Hays of Brooklyn.¹²

Noted Physician in Brooklyn
Educated at Yale and the New York College of Physicians and Surgeons. Studied in Vienna, Berlin and Munich. For twenty years, he was attending physician at the Homes for Destitute Children and also at the Home for Aged men. He practiced medicine for forty-five years.

He was the son of Henry Z. Pratt and Lucy Brace of Hartford, CT. He is survived by his widow, four children and five grandchildren. His children are: Albert Houghton Pratt, William B. Pratt, Lucy B., now Mrs. Leonard Fackner, and Miss Marilla Pratt.
