Biography Kenyon: One interesting family legend says that they lived on the Bonifant farm in Kensington, MD during the Civil War and Mary carried a pearl-handled revolver in her apron pocket as protection against Confederate raiders. My father later owned this revolver but my mother made him sell it!⁶

Biography JWH: "m. Mary Donner. After her death he m. Eliza P. Donner. He enlisted in the First Regiment of the New York Volunteers in June, 1846, commanded by Col. J.D. Stevenson, which was accepted and mustered into the service of the U.S. the following month. He went with his regiment around Cape Horn in 1846, arriving at San Francisco 3, 26, 1847, and soon after accompanied the detachment of his regiment, commanded by Lieut. Col. H. S. Burton to Mexico and while there participated in several conflicts with Mexican troops. He remained in Mexico until the close of the war, returning to California in Oct., 1840 [sic; 1848]. In 1847 he was promoted to a lieutenancy and made adjutant of his command. After his return to California he engaged in mining for a short time and in 1849 settled at San Jose, where he remained until 1886, when he removed to Los Angeles, where he now resides. [practiced law since 1857; pres. city council, 1854]. He was mayor of San Jose in 1855-56. He represented the First District of California in 42d Congress. He was renominated by acclamation for a third term but defeated by a combination of Democrats and Grangers. He served two years on the staff of Maj. Gen. H.W. Halleck with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of California in 1860, and to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1871. He has been leading counsel in numerous important cases involving titles under Spanish land grants in California, and also under the laws of the United States, in which he was successful before the Supreme Court of the State and the United States. He is still engaged in the practice of law in Los Angeles. In 1882, he was one of the five veterans of the Mexican war selected by their society to represent them. He was elected director in 1882 and served actively until 1884, when he resigned. Judge Houghton has won many well contested land suits, the particulars of which are well known to his brother members of the bar."

Houghton, Sherman Otis, representative, was born in New York city, April 10, 1828; son of Abijah otis and Eliza (Farrand) Houghton; grandson of Abijah and Mary (Sawyer) Houghton, and of Daniel and Rhoda (Smith) Farrand; great-grandson of Abijah Houghton and of Lieut. Bethuel and Eliza (Plume) Farrand, and a direct descendant of John Houghton who settled in Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay colony, in 1635. His grandfathers Houghton and Farrand were among the minutemen at Lexington and Concord, and Abijah Houghton was twice wounded at Bunker Hill. His great grandfathers on both sides were also soldiers both in the French and Indian war, and in the patriot army during during the Revolution. Sherman received a thorough commercial education at private schools in the city of New York, and in 1846 enlisted as a private in the volunteer army for service during the Mexican war, and went with his regiment that year around Cape Horn to California and thence to Mexico. He served until the close of the war, and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He returned to California in 1848; engaged in gold mining with success, 1848-49; and in 1849 commenced business at San Jose. He gained a thorough knowledge of the Spanish language and of Spanish and Mexican land laws; was admitted to the bar in 1857, and acquired a large practice before the federal courts in settling titles to lands in California, under grants from Spain and Mexico. He was ordnance officer and inspector of the National Guard of California, 1861-65; was president of the city council of San Jose in 1854, and maor of that city, 1855-56. He was elected by the Republican party a representative in the 42d and 43d congresses, serving 1871-1875. In 1881 was appointed by President Arthur a commissioner to investigate the affairs of the U.S. mint in San Francisco. He removed from San Jose to Los Angeles in 1886, where he continued to practise his profession in 1900.

McGlashan: "Eliza P. Donner, on the tenth of October, 1861, was married to Sherman O. Houghton. Mr. Houghton was born in New York City, April 10, 1828, served in the Mexican war, was Mayor of San Jose in 1855 and 1856, represented California in the Forty-second and Forty-third Congress, and is at present a prominent member of the San Jose bar. Mr. and Mrs. Houghton have six children. The youngest living was born in Washington, D.C., at which city his family resided during the four years he served as member of Congress. Their children are: Eliza P., Sherman 0., Clara H., Charles D., Francis J., and Stanley W. Their youngest born, Herbert S., died March 18, 1878, aged twenty months. Mary M. Donner, daughter of Jacob Donner, was adopted into the family of Mr. James F. Reed, in 1848. She continued a member of this family until her marriage with Hon. S.O. Houghton, of San Jose, August 23, 1859. June 21, 1860, Mrs. Mary M. Houghton died, leaving an infant daughter, Mary M., who is now a young lady, and a member of the family of Mr. and Mrs. Houghton."

His father served in War of 1812 and his grandfather in the Revol. War. He spoke French and Spanish. During the Civil War he served as inspector of militia He was elected to congress as a Republican, serving from 1871 to 1875. In 1881 he was appointed a commissioner to investigate the affairs of the U.S. mint in San Francisco.

HOUGHTON, Sherman 0., lawyer, born in New York, 10 April, 1828. His grandfather served in the Revolution, and his father was a captain of artillery during the war of 1812. The son was educated at a commercial institute in New York, and entered the army as a private in 1846, serving throughout the war with Mexico, and being promoted to the rank of lieutenant. In 1846 he went to California by Cape Horn. He became interested in gold mining, and was mayor of San Jose in 1855-'6. In 1857 he was admitted to the bar, and, owing to his knowledge of French and Spanish, and Spanish and Mexican land grants, he soon acquired a large practice. During the civil war he served as inspector of militia. He was elected to congress as a Republican, serving from 1871 till 1875 on the committees on post offices and post roads, the Pacific railroad, and weights and measures. In 1881 he was appointed a, commissioner to investigate the affairs of the United States mint in San Francisco. He now (1887) resides in Los Angeles, California, and practises law.

Sherman Otis Houghton (April 10, 1828—August 31, 1914) was an American politician from California.
Born in New York City, he completed preparatory studies and attended Collegiate Institute in New York. During the Mexican-American War, Houghton enlisted in the First Regiment, New York Volunteers, in June 1846. The Donner-Houghton House, a historic building in downtown San Jose, was built by Sherman Houghton in 1881. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. From her obituary we take this sketch: 'She was a great granddaughter of two Revolutionary officers, Col. Houghton and Lieut. Farrand. Her paternal ancestors were among the earliest settlers and active participants in the colonial and Indian wars. Her grandfather, Abijah Houghton was one of the minute men of Lexington and Concord. He received a bullet wound at the battle of Bunker Hill. Mrs. Mills was a woman of unusual strength of character, of cheerful and unselfish disposition, fulfilling mentally and physically and spiritually the characteristics one would expect from her double line of ancestry unto all whose lives touched hers, whether closely or more remote, and leaves the memory of a blessed and most beautiful life.⁶'
