BiographyGeorge A. Houghton, son of Capt. Israel, by first wife, who was sister of Hutchins Hapgood, Esq-. Born 1811, in the house now owned by the Flint sisters. Entered Amherst College quite young, but owing to ill health left at the end of his sophomore year. He then taught school for a year or two, a part of the time in St. Louis, where he subsequently became bookkeeper in a mercantile and banking house, where he continued until 1846, when he went to Boston. There, by the influence of old friends, he became Secretary of a Marine Insurance Company, holding the positiou about three years, from
which he resigned. Next he was clerk and cashier in the office of the Boston City Treasury, which he left to adopt the calling for which he was eminently qualified, that of expert accountant, which he continued until the close of his life, in Cambridge in 1868. He was a gentleman by habit and education, of unquestioned integrity and honest, and his word was his bond.12

ResearchSteve Erickson: In a book "Pioneer Familes of Southeastern Michigan" I found the same Jotham Houghton (born ca. 1802) and wife Catherine (b. ca. 1807) and six children.
Steve Erickson: The Jotham that is the father of Margaret is definitely the son of Shevah, the revolutionary pension person, as Jotham is mentioned in the records, as are the siblings of Jotham. I personally have some questions on the pension record as there are conflicts on whether he was a private (Mass records) or a Lietenant (DAR records), what regiment he was in and what battle(s) he fought in. Anyway, the pension records have a detailed listing of where Shevah lived after the War and who his children were.

My reason in writing is that I have made good progress in verifying Jotham Houghton as my wife's ancestor and that Jotham was the son of Shevah (1755-1842) and that Shevah was a Revolutionary War pensioneer. My wife has established Shevah as a “patriot” with the DAR (Ancestor Number A203523).

Michael J. Houghton: Jotham's death certificate with some information, and the children noted on the death certificate that Jotham's mother was Betsy and his father was "Sarah"

Biography1834Granville Twp., Licking, OH, USA, 1834, From Granville-an Ohio Village by William T. Utter:
"One of the most brazen crimes in all of Granville's history was the Great Safe Robbery, perpetrated in 1834 by an unusual young man named Milton Houghton. He lived with his mother in a house near the foot of Sugar Loaf. He was a handsome fellow, well-mannered, and quite popular until he was suspected of petty thievery. On one Saturday night at closing time he came into the Mower-Prichard Store on the northwest corner of Prospect and Broadway. Young William Richards, nephew of Lucius D. Mower, remembered that Houghton had shown interest in how his uncle locked the doors at the rear of the building. It was young Richards, too, who noticed that on Sunday that the keyhole of the front door had been plugged with clay. Fairly late on Sunday night, Richards saw Houghton loitering about the east door of the building, and he wondered what Houghton as doing. What the latter did was this: Later that night he gained entrance at one of the back doors of the building, wheeled the small iron safe out the east door and loaded it on a two-wheeled cart, such as the villagers use for hauling water. He trundled the cart west on Broadway and had started down the Main Street hill when on of the wheels of the cart gave way, much to his irritation. He then went to a blacksmith shop near-by, found a large sledgehammer, and returned to where the safe was resting in the mud. With two or three blows he managed to break open the door, making a noise which disturbed the sleep but did not arouse the curiosity of "Uncle" Sereno Wright. The village was excited the next morning because evidence of the robbery and the empty safe were discovered at about the same time. The streets were muddy and without much difficulty the robber's footprints were followed to the Old Colony Burying Ground, where business papers were found under flat stones. A sizable amount of money was missing. Suspicion began to rest on Houghton and a warrant was obtained to search his house. Officers and some amateur sleuths had no difficulty in identifying articles stolen from local stores during pervious weeks. In a crack in a rock near the house they found the missing money enclosed in a stocking. Houghton's boots, newly cleaned, were matched with footprints which the officers had seen. A tap on the sole of one of the boots made identification positive. The man was tired and sentenced to the penitentiary and that was the end of the story. The villagers were outraged because of the light regard he had shown both for their property rights and their intelligence. It was also remembered that he had cut down some of the finest trees on Sugar Loaf because he grew tired of hearing the squirrels chatter and people hoped he would find it quieter in the penitentiary."5
