Marlborough VT Hx, p. 187: HOUGHTON, Capt. Nahum (s. of Solomon and Deliverance, his wife), was one of eleven children, who all lived until the youngest of their number was 55 years of age, when the death of their eldest sister occurred at the age of 77 years. They were born in Lancaster, Mass. He came to this town about the year 1786, and built a log house on the land which he purchased and settled, and there he spent most of his days. He m. Lovica Howe, of Marlborough, Mass. He d. Jan. 13, 1841, aged 74 yrs., 11 mos., 11 days. His widow d. May 9, 1843, aged 77 yrs. Children: Artemas, b. Dec. 6, 1786; Sidney, b. April 9, 1788, and settled, a physician, in Ellisburgh, N. Y., where he died; Nahum, Jr., b. Feb. 6, 1790, settled and died in Ellisburgh, N. Y; Sally, b. Nov. 29, 1791, m. John-Wild Towne; Louisa, b. July 9, 1793, m. Jonas Whitney, Jr., s. of Deacon Jonas; Tamar, b. April 4, 1795, m. Enos Mather, s. of Maj. Timothy, Dec. 31, 1818; Lucy, b. July 9, 1797, m. Capt. Find a Grave: In the same book under his son Philemon's write up it states "His father (Solomon) was a loyalist in the revolution, and served as paymaster in the English army. After the war he went to England and died there. His will, it is said, bequeathed his property to any of his children who would swear allegiance to the king. All the sons were in favor of the colonies and several were soldiers in the army. One daughter finally went to Canada and fulfilled the requirements of her father's will for the sake of the property.

Solomon Houghton, a Lancaster farmer in comfortable circumstances, fearing the inquisition of the patriot committee, fled from his home. In 1779 the judge of probate for Worcester County appointed commissioners to care for his confiscated estate.^2,25,26

MLM: "Martha's mother, according to legend: several girls were visiting aboard ship in Ireland, when the ship sailed, taking them with it. One died on the way; one married the captain, and Jane came to this country, where she marrie a Mr. White, and had a daughter, Martha White. Jane always kept the white satin slippers and bodice she wore on that fateful day, to show people that she was a person of quality. Jane died Newfane, Vermont, August 25, 1795, aged 77 y'rs."⁴

Deed research will be necessary to determine who some of the owners of this house were, and may establish who built it. It appears first on the map of 1831, under the name "J. Houghton". This would be Major Jonas Houghton, Jr. (1760-1847), whose house is referenced in the 1831 Town Meeting vote that authorized the building of Vaughn Hill Road between his farm and the house of the Widow Nurse (28 Vaughn Hill--see Form 261). He was the son of Capt. (also Deacon) Jonas Houghton of 96 Green Road (See Form 156). Like his father, Jonas, Jr. fought in the Revolution as a Lieutenant and Captain, finally attaining the rank of Major. He married Eunice Houghton (1764-1842) in 1781, and it is likely that they established their own household shortly after that time. Major Houghton lived to be 87, and late in his life, when there was a thriving early-nineteenth-century cottage industry in comb-making in the Lancaster area, he made combs on the property.
Jonas and Eunice had eight children, seven of whom lived to adulthood. The owner shown on the map of 1857 is S. Houghton--possibly their son Sanford Houghton (1803-1876), although according to historian Esther Whitcomb, he lived on Green Road. It is possible that he owned this property for a time after his father's death in 1847, and later relocated to "the Green", where many other Houghton family members resided. By 1870, however, the house was owned by one of his relatives of the next generation, John Whitney Houghton (1838-1906), son of Luther and Sophronia Houghton. By 1898 the map name for the house is Allen, although no one of that name is listed in the street directory of that year.²⁵

Biography

Little: "Levi Houghton was a tall, active and energetic man. By diligent labor and thrift he had acuire a cash capital of $200. Being attracted to the north country, then claiming so much attention, he sailed for Bath, Maine, a boy of nineteen, in 1802, in the schooner "Sophronia" (Captain William Hayden). He bougt a small stock of goods and began business as a merchant, in the corner of a building on Wter street, then owned by Jonathan Davis. In 1808 Mr. Davis failed. Mr. Houghton had prospered and he bought the Davis property and became a merchant on a larger scale, entering the wholesale trade and dealing with the inhabitants of the country all about. Boots and shoes, salt and West India goods were prominent articles in his business. His old brick store yet stands on Water street in Bath, just south of the Bath Iron Works, and has been a prominent landmark on the water front for more than a century. Mr. Houghton's trade brought him into contact with the shipping intrests of Bath, the town having already entered upon the career which made it eventually the foremost and the most famous builder of deep sea sailing tonnage in the new world. He outfitted many of the Bath vessels, sailing on foreign voyages; began importing on his own account; and was naturally led in time to buy shares in some of the vessels which were building in the Bath yards. The first investment of the latter character was in the "Betsey," two hundred and seven tons, built by Edward Wood in 1811. Growing success finally induced him in 1819 to build on his own account the brig "Bolton," one hundred and twenty-one tons, and thus was laid the foundation of a famous fleet of deep-sea vessels and of a shipping house known and respected all over the civilized world. The "Bolton" did so well that Mr. Houghton eventually gave up all his mercantile business except the importation of salt; and he built for his own use and managed an ever-growing fleet of fine ocean carriers. He was one of the most sagacious and far-sighted of those bold and enterprising spirits who established the supremacy of the American flag in the carrying trade of the United States during that palmy period of our merchant marine; his ships were noted for their excellence and durability, and his credit was good in every port to which his vessel sailed. In Bath he was highly esteemed for his high personal character and qualities of mind, and he was a deacon of the old Central Congregational Church for many years.
In 1857, upon the death of Levi Houghton, the business was taken over by his for sons, who formed the firm of Houghton brothers, and who amply sustained the high reputation of the house to the end. In 1891 the last of the beautiful full-rigged ships of the Houghton Brothers was launced from the old yard in Bath. The firm continued in th business for a number of years, in the hope that congress would yet take some action in favor of the Americn merchant marine. It was owing to the persistent neglect of this important interest by the government that the firm of Houghton Brothers gradually retired from the trade, and to-day it does not own a single ship. During the seventy-two years after 1819 the Houghtons had built a fleet of forty-four commerce carriers for their own account, aggregrating about 19,000 net tonnage. Many of these ships had romantic careers. They were ll famous for their strength and durability, standing high in the books of the underwriters. The "Pocohontas" came the nearest to being a full clipper ship of the Houghton fleet. Many of the others were speedy ships, but they were more notable for their carrying capacity, especially those which were destined for the cotton-carrying trade from Southern ports. The "Pocohontas" made some exellent records. The wreck of the "Hanover" at the mouth of the Kennebec river in 1849, celebrated in the story of "The Pearl of Orr's Island," by Harriet Beecher Stowe, was one of the saddest chapters in the history of the coast. Bound for home after a long voyage, the ship was making her way to the mouth of the river in a heavy gale. The captain was dressd to come ashore, many of the crew were in sight of their homes, and members of their families were watching from the shore the gallant fight of the ship with the gale, when the "Hanover" missed stays, and was dashed to pieces on Pond Island, where she became a total loss with all hands. The second "Rochester" met with a surprising adventure, on one occasion, while lying at the Houghton wharf in Bath, discharging cargo. In the night a terrific gale caused the Houghtons much concern. They hastened to the wharf to make sure of her safety, annd she had utterly disappeard from view. She had broken from her moorings and had been blown up stream through the Narrows and burnt Jacket in entire safety, with no one on board to guide her, and was found next day riding safely near the shore. The older "Rochester" was once making for Kennebec in a howling gale and heavy snowstorm. Getting off her course she was driven into the little harbor of Cape Newagen, and there anchored without harm. No pilot would ever have undertaken to guide a ship through that reef-bound entrance, and in fact she was extricated only with the greatest difficulty. In anothe heavy blow the "Prussia" passed safely between Glover's Rock and Cape Small point and was anchored smartly in the lee of the promontory; later lost off Cape Horn, the captain and part of the crew. The splendid ship "Arabia" was wrecked on Cape Horn in terrible weather and the crew were marooned on an island there for two weeks before they were rescued. the captain's wife, Mrs. Macloon, went through this thrilling adventure with her husband. The "Arcadia" was burned. The "Parthia," the last of the fleet was burned while on a voyage from Liverpool to San Francisco. The crew were forced to take to the boats. One boat load landed on Juan Fernandez Island, made famous by Robinson Crusoe, and the other finally made Valparaiso after much suffering."
