BiographyThe Spirit of '76, p. 428: "Jonathan Houghton's commission as Lieutenant under King George in colony times is a very interesting document. The poem describes him as Captain, but although he afterwards attained that rank, the commission says Lieutenant. This commission hangs upon the wall of in the home of one of his descendants, Dr. Arthur W. Clark, Lawrence, Kan. In the reproduction which The Spirit of '76 gives below, the words written in the original are printed in italics. The commission reads:
Thomas Hutchinson, Esquire;
Captain General and Governor in Chief in and over His Majesty's Province of Massachusetts Bay signed T. Hutchinson
To Jonathan Houghton, gentn, greetings:
By virtue of the power and authority in and by his Majesty's Royal Commission to Me granted to be Captain General, &c. over his Majesty's Province of Massachusetts Bay aforesaid, I Do by these presents (reposing especial Trust and Confidence in your Loyalty, Courage and good Conduct) constitute and appoint you the said Jonathan Houghton to be Lieutenant of the first military Company of foot in the Town of Bolton, whereof Jonas Houghton is Captain in the regiment of militia in the County of Worcester, whereof Caleb Wilder, Esq. is Colonel. You are therefore carefully and diligently to discharge the
Duty of a Lieutenant in leading, ordering and excercising the said Company in Arms, both inferior Officers and Soldiers, and to keep them in good Order and Discipline, and they are hereby commanded to obey you as their Lieutenant and you are yourself to observe and follow such Orders and Instructions
as you shall from time to time receive from your Captain or other your superior Officer, according to Military Rules & Discipline, pursuant to the Trust reposed in you. Given under my hand and Seal at Arms at Boston, the Twelfeth day of July in the Eleventh year of the Reign of His Majesty King George the Third, Annoque Domini, 1771. By his Excellency's Command (signed) Jac. Cotton, D. Surg.

A latter commission in the American Revolution, was long in the possession of George W. W. Houghton, author of the poem above, and is now in the archives of the New York Historical Society.

The Houghtons of Bolton, Mass., were the ancestors of all the principal families of that name in the United States. Some of their descendants have been H.O. Houghton, the Boston publisher; George W. W. Houghton, who besides the poem just given has written others, including "The Legend of St. Olaf's Kirk"; the Houghton Brothers of Bath, Maine, shipping merchants; Francis W. Houghton of New York; Amory and Charles F. Houghton, Glass Manufactures of Corning, N.Y; Augustus S. Houghton of New York, and Albert C. Houghton of North Adams. Dr. Arthur W. Clark of Lawrence, Kansas, a direct descendant of Jonathan of the poem, is now compiling the genealogy of this family."

William D. Houghton: Lieutenant Jonathan Houghton (1737-1829)
Jonathan Houghton was born on November 11, 1737, to Jonathan and Mary Houghton of Bolton, Massachusetts. At the age of 22, he married Susan Moore of Cambridge, Mas-sachusetts on November 24, 1759. By the time he was 38 years-old, he was a Lieutenant of Captain Benjamin Hastings‘s company, under Col. John Whitcomb‘s Regiment, during the first skirmish with the British at the Battle of Lexington. He continued to bravely fight with a number of militia groups and, in September 1776, his company of 78 men reinforced Washington‘s Continental Army as they marched to the northward or Canada department.? The war records state that Lt. Houghton later served as a surgeon on the Massachusetts Navy sloop the Republic.
Houghton, Joh. Pgs 317-318.
Paullin, Charles, The Navy of the American Revolution, 1908. Pgs. 331-335, 342.
In January 1776, the Massachusetts General Court created its first navy by authorizing £10,000 to build at least five sloops, each weighing about 110 tons and manned with 14 to 16 carriage guns. By July 1776, Massachusetts had the following three sloops, with great names, ready for sea and battle: Tyrannicide, Rising Empire, and Independence; and by September 1776, they had two more sloops ready: the Republic and Massachusetts. Each vessel would have 115 men on board. All recruits, which included officers, seaman, and marines, would have to furnish a good effective firearm, cartridge box, cutlass and blanket. In October 1776, Captain John Foster Williams commanding the sloop Republic with its 12 guns and a crew of 60 men, was sent on a mission off Nantucket and soon captured the British armed ship Julius Caesar. However, the Republic that Jonathan Houghton served on as Surgeon was only active from 1776-1777, and then served as a commercial vessel for the Board of War, carrying goods along the eastern coast and to islands in the Caribbean. In 1776, the Massachusetts Council even set a Naval Pay Rate for each crewman on one of its vessels—ironically in British pounds (£) sterling per month, as the colonies did not have a national currency:
Captain £8
Surgeon £7
First Lt. £5 8s.
Second. Lt. £5
Master £4
Mate £3
Seaman £2
So we know that as a Surgeon, Jonathan Houghton would have earned the princely sum of £7 a month or £84 a year. Within a year, by 1777, inflation had devalued the pound so much that this wage chart was basically doubled, as a Caption would then earn £16 per month and a surgeon would earn £14. In addition, the Captain and crew were authorized to keep 50 percent of the booty they captured at sea from enemy vessels. This captured booty could increase a sailor‘s wage by ten times or more. Some sloops sailed as far as the coast of France and Spain to seize British ships and their cargo.
Paullin, Charles, The Navy of the American Revolution, 1908. Pgs. 331-335.

Dr. Cone, early in life took up a new version of the scriptures; he was the pioneer in this work, with almost the whole church against him; but he finally brought the church in America and England to his standard.
