ObituaryJul 20, 1909NY Times: Prof. G. S. Houghton

Reading, Mass., July 19. Prof. George Stearns Houghton, who was for twenty years sub-master of the Lawrence Grammar School in South Boston, died here yesterday afternoon at his residence, 25 Howard Street, from hardening of the arteries. Prof. Houghton was born in Lexington in 1833. He retired on account of advanced age two years ago. On July 29 last year Mr. and Mrs. Houghton celebrated the fifty-third anniversary of their marriage, and a striking tribute was paid them at their home in this town.
One of Prof. Houghton's treasures was a letter from Gen. Francis A. Walker, President of the Massachusetts Institution of Technology, in which Gen. Walker acknowledged the great part Prof. Houghton played in his success when Prof. Houghton was fitting him for college.
Of the six children born to him and Mrs. Houghton there are living the Rev. Edward L. Houghton of Cambridge, William C. Houghton, Master of Manual Training in the Waltham High School, and Herbert R. Houghton of this town, who was for twelve years an official of the C. B. & Q. Railroad.9

BiographySeattle, King Co., WA, USA, JWH: "He is a member of the Brighton Creamery Co., 512 Pacific Block, Seattle, Wash."... "Going from the farm Henry Merriam Houghton entered the service of Theodore H. Seavey, a successful gorcer in Cambridge, Mass. In 1876 went to Denver and clerked five years. In 1883 he built the first creamery in Colorado and operated it till the fall of 1905, commencing with a business of forty dollars a week, which later went to $150,000 per year. Went to Seattle in 1906, and with two others purchased the then largest and best equipped grocery house west of New York, doing a business of $350,000 per year. He also took up brokerage and in three years built up a large and successful importing business from China and Japan, besides doing a fine domestic trade. He, with five others, in 1896, organized the Colorado Society of Sons of the American Revolution which now has nearly three hundred members. He still maintains his membership in that society and expects to go to Boston in May, 1912, to the National Congress as Colorado's represntative. He is remarkably well preserved and a man of great energy and business ability."

"Birthplace of Henry Merriam Houghton: Built before war of Revolution. John Adams, John Hancock, Elbridge Gerry, and others rested on their way from Concord to Boston the evening of April 18, 1775. At 1 o'clock on the 19th, Paul Revere was there. At sunrise the British army, 1,500, was there. Major Pitcairn, Colonel Smith and officers had their breakfast under the tree shown in the picture while the army was lined up in front of the house. In the afternoon between 2 and 3 o'clock, the army retreated from Concord on the run. Three of the soldiers went into the house and died and were buried under a pine tree which was standing ten years ago".
